IPO & Investor Storytelling

IPO Narrative Investor Materials Narrative Positioning Creative Lead
Rocket Companies IPO Prospectus

When Rocket Companies prepared to go public, the finance team brought me in to support one of the most confidential efforts in the company's history. The challenge wasn't just creating an S-1 document — it was creating one that actually sounded like Rocket. Unlike most companies filing to go public, Rocket's identity is built on culture, people, creativity, and playfulness. A standard black-and-white text document wasn't going to tell that story.

The work extended beyond the S-1 into the investor roadshow — a grueling series of all-day presentations to institutional investors, revised and refined between each round. These weren't small decks. We're talking 200+ page presentations, where I built the templates, managed the design system, and ensured the narrative held across every iteration.

Due to strict disclosure requirements, the work couldn't be shared — even internally. I was leading the creative team at the time, but this project required operating independently, handling creative direction and storytelling narrative under full confidentiality.

"The S-1 couldn't just be a document. It had to be a story — one that proved Rocket was unlike any company investors had seen before."

Final Execution

1. Research & Benchmarking

Started by auditing other S-1 filings with more playful, narrative-driven tones to build a point of view on what was possible and make concrete recommendations for our approach.

2. Narrative Architecture

Built the foundational intro narrative that framed who Rocket is — centering culture and team members as a core value driver, not a footnote.

A significant part of this work was translation: taking the complex financial and business model content that runs through an S-1 and finding the shared meaning underneath it — the story that made Rocket's numbers, structure, and strategy legible and compelling to investors who didn't yet know the company.

3. Visual Design System

Developed a complete visual system for investor presentations: graphics, templates, and design frameworks that extended Rocket's cultural identity into a high-stakes financial context.

At the time, our brand was more functional than narrative — heavy on logos, light on story. I sketched a concept that put a person at the center: someone in a home, on the phone, connected to all of Rocket's homeownership platforms. Instead of a list of logos, it showed the human at the heart of a connected platform. I pitched the direction to the CEO, it was approved, and it became the visual foundation for how we communicated the connected homeownership story throughout the materials.

4. Iterative Execution

Worked through dozens of rounds across graphics and templates — each revision tightening the narrative and sharpening the design.

Rocket Companies went public on the NYSE in August 2020, raising $1.8 billion in one of the largest IPOs of the year. The cultural narrative embedded in the offering materials positioned Rocket not just as a mortgage company, but as a people-first, culture-driven technology platform — a story that held up under the scrutiny of public markets.
